Altshullers matrix as a training device and means of measuring in the development of dialectic thinking.

Summary

The present work offersthe way of enhancing abilities of the trainees of the TRIZ courses to develop habits of dialectic thinking in order to improve the quality of Engineering systems analysis based on the notions of Disadvantage and Engineering Contradiction.

KEY WORDS:

Dialectic thinking, creativity, Engineering contradiction, Altshuller’s matrix

Introduction

The present work shows a new sphere of application of Altshuller’s matrix  39Х39 as a tool of creativity development. The data of modern TRIZ research directed at development of creativity and inventive thinking show that one of the most important components of inventive thinking is the ability to formulate engineering contradictions (EC). The present work is the development of V.Petrov webinar “Inventive thinking”. [1]  This work is the author’s variant of classification of necessary components, which are necessary fore the generation of the inventive thinking phenomeon:

      Componentsofinventivethinking.

1.       а. System-basedthinking.

2.       b. Evolutionary thinking.

3.       c. Thinking through identification and resolving of contradictions.

4.       d. Resource thinking.

5.       e.Thinking according the models (model-based thinking).

6.       f. Development of creative thinking.

The authors of the present work basically agree with such a classification system and would like to propose their own variant of developing the component 4 of the given list  “Thinking through identification and resolving of contradictions”.

Historically TRIZ as a science was based on this very important notion and from the point of view of the authors yielded impressive particular applied results of consideration of F.Hegel’s dialectic in the technical sphere. According to one of the definitions, which was given by the author of TRIZ to the very theory: TRIZ is an applied dialectic materialism, applied to the analysis in technical sphere. Let us quote the original source: "Theoretical basis for TRIZ яare the trends of engineering systems evolution. First of all, these are the trends of materialistic dialectic." ...".3.2. TRIZ – WORKINGTOOLOFDIALECTIC.TRIZ uses the trends of materialistic dialectic for organizing creative activity. TRIZ mechanisms enable to instrumentalize these global trends of evolution as applied to particular problems of inventive creativity. Therefore, Therefore, theory of inventive problem solving is sometimes called applied dialectic." [2]

Engineering Contradiction as an object of Training

This is EC according to the opinion of the author (it is quoted from the original http://www.altshuller.ru/) :

•3. Engineering contradictions (EC) are interactions within the system which consist, for instance, in the fact that the useful action also causes a harmful one. Or introduction (intensification) of useful action or elimination (weakening) of the harmful action causes the degradation (in particular, inadmissible sophistication) of one of the system parts or of the entire system.

•Engineering contradictions are composed through recording one state of the system element with theexplanation of what is good and what is bad thereby. After that the opposite state of the same element iswritten down and once again it is recorded, what is good and what is bad.

•Sometimes only the product is given in the conditions of the problem; there is no engineering system (tool), therefore there is no explicit EC. In such cases EC are obtained by conventional review of two states (of the object), though one of them is originally inacceptable.

•FOR EXAMPLE, the following problem is given: “How to observe with an unequipped eye the micro-particles, which are suspended in a sample of optically clean liquid, if these particles are so small that the light passes round them?"

•EC-1:

•If the particles are small, the fluid remains optically clean, but the particles cannot be observed with an unequipped eye.

•EC-2:

•If the particles are big, they are well observable, however the fluid is no longer optically clean and this is inadmissible.

.

This is EC according to the glossary ofAlgorithm company: Engineering contradictions (EC): a situation, in which an attempt to improve one Parameter of the engineering system leads to the inadmissible degrading of another Parameter. For example, an attempt to improve the strength of the aircraft wing by increasing its thickness leads to the inadmissible increase in its weight.

Engineering contradiction (EC) from the point of view of the authors is a minimum cause/effect chain, which offers a substantiated evaluation of the notion Disadvantage (D), ciphered in the language of parameters, which are encountered in  Altshuller’s matrix  [3] . However, training practice shows that mastering dialectic mode of thinking by the trainees is associated with some difficulties and often it happens that the training process is reduced only to the explanation of content of these thinking models, which negatively tells upon the ability of the trainee to find efficient ways of solving particular problems.

In this connection the authors conducted target-oriented research work for several years, which was aimed at developing additional exercises on evolution and strengthening of the ability to think in the mode of dialectic.

As it was stated in the works of the authors devoted to classification of Disadvantages (D), [4,5] , 30 listed popular D, formulated in the generalized form are a meta-cathegory for EC and the mastering of process for recognizing these D in actual systems significantly simplifies the process of formulating an EC. A two-stage process was proposed and implemented in the technology of teaching TRIZ. First comes the training of the ability of the user to see and to identify N through the development of basic classification, who cannot be called exhaustive, however, until today not a single case was ever mentioned, when the proposed list did not allow to identify the given disadvantage. After that the habits of the user in formulating EC are trained.

In this case it is not surprising that there are significant differences in efficieny of analysis with a freshman and an experienced TRIZ user. An experienced user sees a large list of D and, consequently, could compile an equivalent list of EC, while the freshman at the stage of the first steps experiences significant difficulties in the analysis and, as a consequence, sees an incomplete list of D and of EC, which correspond to them.

Using empirical methods, the author and other researchers stated that in any engineering system (ES) one can identify not one EC, but several ones, since the list of D can never consist of a single parameter.

This circumstance was an impetus to creation of a new efficient approach to training the abilities of the trainees to formulate EC.

For this purpose about 50 analyses of particular ES were made for identifying a maximally exhaustive list of EC with them. Such ES as "spectacles"  [6] , "knife" [7], "torch "[8], "umbrella",  "hammer" , etc. were selected as “specimen research”.

As a rule , so-called “perfect systems” (as defined by B.Zlotin and A.Zusman) [9], which are distinguished by a non-complicated operation principle and are the object of ordinary everyday life of all people, which does not require any detailed descriptions and, what is the most important, enables the trainee to perform not the idealistic experiments in the field of imagination: what and how works in the system, what happens often during the performance of actual projects, but to use his or her accumulated experience of using them.

Besides, a phenomenon was identified in the development of training exercises of this kind, which has not yet been explained by the authors: one can find rather big lists of EC with perfect systems as compared to ephemeral marketable goods. [10] . The discussion of this circumstance, which rather reminds of a paradox, is beyond the scope of the present publication, however, it is worthy of being mentioned, since one of the goals of TRIZ summit is the exchange of experience and setting forth new topics for scientific research.

Here is a description of the operation principle of the new method for training inventive thinking:

During the first step the trainee gets a set of exercises, which are oriented at the recognition of D (50 exercises have been developed).

During the second step the trainee does the exercise on identifying all possible EC fr the proposed object as an independent work, then he or she gets a possibility to compare his or her results with the research, which had been earlier performed by an experienced TRIZ user.

Using the method of comparing the results of homework with a pattern, which had been created earlier, it is possible to construct a measuring procedure, which could test the ability of the trainee to perform the dialectic analysis at the beginning of training sessions and to measure the dynamics of the progress, recording the ratio of  А (number of EC, which the trainee could formulate) and B (number of EC, which had been identified by a more experienced teacher).

The function of the language of formalization was performed by the G.S.Altshuller matrix in the version of 1971, which has 39 parameters [3]. The publication of A.Priven [11] implied a research, which shows that G.S.Altshuller matrix without any doubt is quite a reliable tool for recommendations in the field of approaches to expert evaluations, at least, because of the fact that from the standpoint of mathematical statistics there is a system in the recommended techniques, which is backed up by the phenomenon of similarity of numerous pairs of techniques (approximately 20 pairs), the analysis of which confirms this logical occurrence of these techniques both from the viewpoint of physics and from the viewpoint of already available experience of using TESE. This research, which was performed rather thoroughly from the mathematical standpoint, allowed to formulate additional 5 “meta-techniques”, which were identified by other specialists as actually existing mechanisms of the trend “coordination – dis-coordination”.

The authors of the present work note that in order to achieve the stated goals (measuring of efficiency of TRIZ training, G.S.Altshuller matrix was used differently. Its traditional function is the solving of engineering problems. Its new function is the check of ability of the trainee to master the dialectic method of thinking via comparing of the performed work in the field of analysis with the same work, performed in advance by a more experienced user.

The experience of the authors shows that such kind of exercises is useful due to many reasons:

  • This kind of exercises creates favorable conditions for enhancing the ability of the students to improve the quality of analysis in the course of project performance
  • This kind of exercises can serve as a method for monitoring of measuring the enhancement of the thinking quality at least at a first approximation
  • This kind of exercises could be a means of entrance control at the beginning of TRIZ training sessions for Level 3, if the students (trainees) got their education in other places.
  • This kind of exercises could be a means of independent study of TRIZ without a teacher.
  • This kind of exercises could be a convenient manual for other TRIZ teachers and obtainment of materials for generalizing the degree of success of different approaches to TRIZ teaching.
